Types of Cockroach
The German Cocroach is one of the smallest and most abudant cockroaches in Inner Western Sydney. German cockroaches typically measure between 10 to 15mm long, and are dark brown in colour. They find shelter in large numbers inside electrical appliances, warm, or moist areas. Found in large numbers, they breed in crevices, cracks, and kitchen door hinges. Their fast speed at which they breed at makes this a difficult species to control and thus make them one of the largest problems in Inner West Sydney
Brown Banded Cockroach
Similar in appearance to the German Cockroach, the brown-banded cockroach is commonly mistaken for the German Cockroach. They measure 13 to 14mm long, and are similar in colour to the German Cockroach - tan to light brown. They are, however, not as common as the German Cockroach, and have a significantly smaller population. This species does not breed as quickly as the German species. The Brown Banded cockroach is typically not found at daytime, as they avoid light.
The American Cockroach is the largest of the cockroach species found in Sydney's Inner West. They are the largest species of cockroach, and they are also the most common pests in residential and commercial properties. The American cockroach has a longer life span than the other cockroach species, and they can fly. They are dark brown or shiny red, and measure 28 to 44mm long - more than double the size of the German Cockroach. They are the most common cockroach found in Sydney and the Inner West.
The Australian Cockroach measures between 23 and 35mm long. While they are often istaken for American Cockroaches, they are easily distinguished by the yellow/white markings found on the sides of their wings. They inhabit subfloor areas, and gardens. Able to move and fly quickly, they often dart out of sight when someone enters a room, fitting into small cracks and under doors. It prefers warmer climates, but is resistant to cold weather once indoors. Found down the east coast of Australia, this species of cockroach is found in Inner West Sydney.
